Grassy Pond to show ‘Zootopia’

LAKE PARK — Grassy Pond will show the movie “Zootopia” for free for Department of Defense identification card holders and with a charge for the general public.
The screen will be at the bottom of a hill so it will mimic the build of a movie theater, said Steve Black, Grassy Pond manager.
Black recommended residents bring out their own chairs or blankets for the movie because seating will not be provided.
Unlike like the theater, free cookies and hot chocolate will be provided and residents can bring snacks for the movie, Black said. However, Grassy Pond will have snacks and refreshments available for purchase.
There will also be seven or eight individual fire pits available for residents to use during the movie, he said.
The choice to show “Zootopia” was to appeal to families.
“We were looking for a family-friendly movie that would allow someone’s family to come out and enjoy a movie that was appropriate for all ages,” Black said.
While the movie is free for Department of Defense identification card holders, it is $5 per car to enter into Grassy Pond.
The money doesn’t go to a charity but it helps Grassy Pond give out free cookies and hot chocolate and helps keep it free for military personnel, Black said.
“When they opened up Grassy Pond to the public, they wanted to keep giving the military their benefits,” he said.
Grassy Pond shows about four movies throughout the year, Black said.
The movie will show Dec. 30 at 6 p.m. For more information call (229) 559-5840.
