VALDOSTA, Ga. — A woman was raped at knife point at her home Thursday afternoon by a man she knew, and the suspect has been arrested, city police said.

Police arrested 31-year-old Mike Anthony Thomas Jr., Thursday and charged him with rape, aggravated assault, and possession of a knife during a crime, according to a report from the Valdosta Police Department. All three are felony charges.

A driver on West Gordon Street at about 4 p.m. Thursday reportedly saw an injured female desperately waving him down, police said.

The driver called 911, and when police arrived, the female reportedly said someone she knew had assaulted her and then fled the area, according to police.

The suspect had just been released from state prison in August, and after visiting the victim’s house Thursday, he reportedly got into an argument with her and started attacking her, Lt. Adam Bembry of the Valdosta Police Department said.

Bembry said the victim reported being punched, kicked, dragged into her room, raped and cut with a knife. The knife injuries were not serious, police said.

Police tracked a suspect down within two hours to a home on North Forrest Street, where he was arrested and taken to the Lowndes County Jail, Bembry said.

“The vicious nature of this case is shocking, and no one should have to endure such a terrible situation,” Bembry said. “The Valdosta Police Department commends the victim for having the courage to come forward and assist law enforcement.”

Bembry also praised the driver and his passenger who stopped to help the woman and call 911.

“The actions of the two ‘good Samaritans’ who initially stopped to assist the victim were greatly appreciated,” Bembry said.
