Senior and captain Trey Walton highlighted the weekend’s individual performances. He went undefeated at 126 pounds.

“We had several do a great job, but he was a shining star for us,” coach Benjy Scarbor said.

Quinn McGlamery (120) lost only one match and it was against a two-time defending state champion. Miles Parramore, a 132-pound senior and captain, lost one match and it was after being bumped up one weight division, as Scarbor shuffled the lineup around. Travis Webb, a 138-pound senior, had one loss.

Junior Kevin Alderman, who weighs 152, wrestled at 160 the entire tournament and only had one loss. Kem Collins joined the team in late December, wrestled at 182 and had a strong showing.

Valdosta (37-6) began the three-day tournament with a 59-15 win against Gainesville on Thursday before falling against Alexander 46-19 and topping Effingham County 45-31 on Friday. On Saturday, the Wildcats defeated Creekview 37-28 then defeated Allatoona 40-36 to advance to the semifinal round against Richmond Hill.

“I was really proud of the team for fighting back after the loss to Alexander,” Scarbor said. “We do have some strong spots in our lineup and some young guys in our lineup, too.

“It was a good experience for us. We hadn’t been to the state duals since 2011, where we took third… For all of these guys, it was the first time making the state duals. And so it was a good experience for them all.”
