Gas prices nudge downward

VALDOSTA, Ga. — Gasoline prices in Valdosta slid slightly during the past week, according to statistics.

The average price for a gallon of regular gasoline in the city Sunday was $2.20, down three cents from a week earlier, according to AAA’s Daily Fuel Gauge Report.

The lowest price for gas in Valdosta Sunday was $2.10 a gallon at a store on West Hill Avenue, while the highest was $2.84 a gallon at a North Patterson Street retailer, according to the gas tracking website gasbuddy.com

No fuel station in the city was listed by gasbuddy as offering gas for less than $2 a gallon Sunday.

Nationally, the average price of gas Sunday was $2.34, down from $2.37 the previous week, while Georgia’s statewide average was $2.24, a decline of two cents from seven days earlier, according to the auto club.

In Friday market action, benchmark crude oil fell 64 cents, or 1.2 percent, to close at $52.37 a barrel in New York. Brent crude, which is used to price oil sold internationally, slid 56 cents, or 1 percent, to close at $55.45 a barrel in London.

The slide in crude prices helped pull down shares in energy sector stocks.

Oilfield services company Baker Hughes slid $1.50, or 2.4 percent, to $60.92, while drilling services company Transocean lost 36 cents, or 2.3 percent, to $15.48. Marathon Petroleum fell 87 cents, or 1.8 percent, to $48.38.
