Eleven deaths confirmed in South Georgia

Following early morning storms the death toll for South Georgia is currently up to 11. With two deaths reported in Brooks County, two reported in Berrien County and seven reported in Cook County.

Brooks County Coroner Michael Miller said the two confirmed deaths in Brooks County involve a married couple. The husband and wife were in a residence thrown onto Highway 122 when what the coroner said was a tornado hit it.

No fatalities or injuries have been reported in Lowndes County as a result of the storms, according to Lowndes County Emergency Operations at approximately 11 a.m. Sunday.

Lowndes County Emergency Management has opened the Emergency Operations Center and agency/department heads from Lowndes County and the City of Valdosta are working to coordinate the ongoing response, Lowndes County Clerk Paige Dukes said in a statement.

WAFT 101.1 FM is maintaining a list of churches that have cancelled services, according to the county.

Current hazards in addition to severe weather that will continue to impact the area through the afternoon are as follows:

-Down power lines

-Flooded roads, streets, and bridges

“Citizens are strongly encouraged to stay off the road, in an indoor location away from windows and doors” Dukes said. “Please be advised that while conditions may improve this morning, this is only temporary. A third storm is forecast to move through Lowndes County just after mid day.”
