REMERTON — The Lowndes County Humane Society has moved to 1740 W. Gordon St.

After operating several years on East Jane Street, the Humane Society purchased its new building last September, said Joe Paoletti, a board member.

Paoletti said the organization began operating at its new location last week.

Owning the building allows the Humane Society to better serve the animals, he said.

Paoletti said the society has plans to add glass walls, rooms for dogs, and other renovations to its Remerton location.

The Lowndes County Humane Society offers four main programs:

– The Amos Barfield Spay/Neuter Assistance program offers vouchers for discounted spay and neuter surgeries for cats and dogs.

– The pet adoption program holds adoption events most Saturdays at PetSmart, finds foster homes for dogs and offers cat adoptions.

– The trap-neuter-return program involves catching stray cats, spaying or neutering the cats, then returning them to their natural habitat.

– Moody Pet Guardian Angels works with Moody Air Force Base to provide temporary and permanent homes for pets belonging to deployed and reassigned military owners.

The Humane Society is a no-kill shelter, meaning its primary goal is to find adoptive homes for pets, Paoletti said.

He said the Human Society is non-profit and relies largely on donations and volunteer work to provide its services.
