VALDOSTA – An incident of graffiti in a Lowndes Hall bathroom stall on Valdosta State University’s campus was reported to law-enforcement authorities Friday afternoon.
The incident was reported to VSU’s Police Department at about 4:30 p.m. Friday, said Jessica Pope, VSU communications and media relations coordinator.
Students across campus took to Twitter, sharing photos of the derogatory and racially charged graffiti, sparking Twitter statements from various student organizations and VSU faculty.
“Valdosta State University is a learning environment based on trust and mutual respect. This type of behavior does not represent the values of our campus or the voice of our community. It does not reflect the code to which we hold ourselves — The Blazer Creed,” according to a statement from VSU. “As a university, we are dedicated to the core values of community, and we encourage our Blazers to uphold the core principles of civility, integrity, and citizenship. We believe that a proud Blazer shows courtesy and compassion, as well as respect for the dignity of, every human being.”
VSU police are currently investigating the incident and the university asks anyone with information to contact campus police, (229) 259-5555. Anonymous tips can be reported through the Silent Watch Form at valdosta.edu/police.
