DALTON, Ga. — The Dalton Police Department is investigating a January armed robbery on the campus of Morris Innovative High School and has arrested a student who was present when a man pressed a gun to the back of a student’s head and ripped a gold chain off his neck.
Jose Juan Ramirez, 17, of 403 Water St.-A, was arrested on Tuesday. According to police spokesman Bruce Frazier, Ramirez wasn’t holding a weapon but is being charged as a “party to the crime.” According to Georgia law, a person is a party to a crime when the person “intentionally aids or abets in the commission of the crime.”
Frazier said the DPD is still investigating, and two other suspects are listed in the incident report. The incident occurred after school around 4 in the afternoon of Jan. 19.
According to the report, a student and his girlfriend reported to police that two black males in black pants and black hoodies were sitting on the back steps of the school. The two students approached Ramirez and while talking to him, the two black males yelled at him and approached. One of the males lifted the bottom of his hoodie and pulled a gun from his waistband.
After the gold chain was snatched, the two ran into the housing behind the school and the student and his girlfriend ran to a nearby liquor store and waited for his father to pick them up. The father returned to the school with the two and alerted school officials, who called police.
School officials identified Ramirez from the description given by the student, who said he recognized Ramirez but didn’t know his name.
