VALDOSTA — Area middle school girls learned “you can be what you want to be” at the annual Sister-to-Sister Summit Saturday.
The event is hosted by the American Association of University Women.
Each year, AAUW hosts a summit to empower sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade girls by championing diversity and higher education, organizers said.
AAUW chose “I’m Possible” as the 2017 theme.
“Decision-making for middle school girls is not easy. Peer pressure is huge,” said Rosetta Coyne of AAUW.
The event, held at the Valdosta State University’s Education Center, was broken into six sessions that mirrored the theme of the summit.
“We want to make sure the girls are more aware and more able to make choices that affect their lives,” Coyne said. “We want to let them know that they can do anything — anything.”
The event marked the 19th anniversary of the summit.
