Renfro’s PK sends Generals past Valiants in OT

Ben Renfro drilled a penalty kick late in the second overtime period to send the Georgia Christian boys soccer team past the Valwood Valiants 2-1 on Friday night in Dasher.
It was GCS’ third win in a row.
The initial scoring came early when Lukas Smitdas scored on a breakaway at the 14-minute mark, making it 1-0. The Valiants retaliated only minutes later when a corner kick found its way through traffic and into the net, evening the match to 1-1.
Both teams spent the remainder of the first half and all of the second half battling to break the tie and secure the win. Entering the first overtime period, the Generals pressured and attacked the Valiants’ defense, but with no success. The roles reversed in the second overtime period as Valwood became the aggressor. With a penalty shootout looming and only 14 seconds left on the clock, Valwood was whistled for a handball in the penalty box. Disregarding the mounting pressure, Renfro drilled home the penalty kick and sealed the victory for the Generals.
The Valwood girls defeated GCS 2-0 in the opening match. Valwood’s Sarah Sable scored a goal, assisted by Clare Nijem. Tori Maxwell added a second goal from an assist by Brooke Miller.
