ETON, Ga. — Steve Shaw, who has served on the Eton City Council since 2002, was arrested on Friday by the Murray County Sheriff’s Office after investigators say they arranged a drug buy with him.
Detective Shannon Ramsey said investigators arrested Shaw on felony drug charges.
“We received information he was attempting to purchase prescription medication which obviously wasn’t his,” Ramsey said. “During the course of the investigation, we recorded conversations arriving at a price and setting up a meeting location. Once all of that was agreed upon with the undercover officer, we went to that location and arrested him.”
Shaw, 56, was charged with criminal attempt to violate Georgia’s Controlled Substances Act and use of a communication facility in commission of a felony involving controlled substances, both felonies. He was released from the Murray County jail on Sunday on a $2,000 bond.
When contacted Monday evening, Shaw declined to comment and referred questions to Chatsworth attorney Bill Keith. A message was left at Keith’s office but it was after business hours.
Messages left for Eton Mayor Billy Cantrell regarding Shaw’s status with the City Council were not immediately returned.
According to Shaw’s biography on the Eton city website, he is a veteran of the United States Air Force and is trained in law enforcement. He is a former Murray County firefighter and was a captain at Murray County Fire Station 3.
