MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. — A Milledgeville man was arrested on drug trafficking charges last Wednesday afternoon by local authorities.

During the bust, the suspect tried to escape, but a deputy sheriff managed to tackle him before he could get very far. At the time, the suspect was in the possession of an AR-47 assault rifle that had a pistol grip, along with a 9mm pistol.

The drug arrest yielded local agents with the Ocmulgee Drug Task Force with a variety of illegal drugs, as well as more than $2,000 in cash.

Ocmulgee Drug Task Force Agent Cameron Ptak identified the suspect as Jeremy Deshawn Simmons, of Allen Memorial Drive in Baldwin County.

Simmons, who remained jailed Monday in the Baldwin County Law Enforcement Center, was charged with Violation of the Georgia Controlled Substances Act (VGCSA) for trafficking in cocaine, possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute, possession of other illegal narcotics, such as morphine, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, possession of a firearm during the commission of crimes, felony obstruction of a law enforcement officer, and misdemeanor obstruction of a law enforcement officer.

Ptak said it is possible that Simmons could be charged with additional criminal offenses.

Ocmulgee Drug Task Force Commander Wesley Nunn said his agency is talking with federal agents about the case.

Simmons’ arrest was made at a residence at 187 Shanna Drive in Milledgeville.

Earlier, Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office Detective Haley Beckham along with

Deputy Sgt. Lee Kitchens, and Deputy Raymond Mosley, spotted someone, later identified as Simmons, in a suspicious car and in Violation of the Georgia Open Container Law.

A deputy had to chase the suspect down before he caught him. Simmons later tried to kick a deputy, which led to the second obstruction charge.
