ADEL – Cook County Arts Council gets “all together ooky” by presenting the musical “The Addams Family.”

The show is the annual summer musical that has been presented by the council for several years, said Jeremy Williams, the show’s director.

The Addams Family may be “mysterious and spooky” but they are also appealing.

The Addams Family has been popular since cartoonist Charles Addams’ series of macabre cartoons from the mid-20th century to the 1960s TV show to 1970s animated appearances to feature films in the 1990s and continued interest in all of these Addams formats in the years since.

In 2010, “The Addams Family” musical opened on Broadway with Nathan Lane playing Gomez and Bebe Neuwirth as Morticia.

The musical features all of the Addams regulars, such as Uncle Fester, Lurch, Grandmama, Wednesday, Pugsley, etc.

“The show is a fun musical comedy with cute songs and lots of laughs,” Williams said.

Given the distinct looks of each character, Williams said auditioning provided spot-on performers for the roles.

“We were very fortunate to have a cast who could handle the acting and singing demands of the roles while also matching the physicality of the characters,” the director said. “The costumes and makeup have been a fun challenge for our actors, as we’ve tried to match the look and feel of these beloved characters.”

“The Addams Family” is scheduled to play 7:30 p.m. Thursday and Friday, June 1, 2, Carolyn Harris Performing Arts Center, Cook High School campus, Adel.
