VALDOSTA — HGTV fans, listen up: One of Valdosta’s own is the star of a ‘House Hunters International’ episode airing Monday, July 24, at 10:30 p.m.
Haley Mager, 27, is the daughter of Valdosta residents Jay and Melinda Adkins. She was born and raised right here in South Georgia and graduated from Valdosta High School in 2008.

But right now Haley and her husband Garrett are almost 5,000 miles away in Nuremberg, Germany. Monday’s “House Hunters International” episode will show their transition from a southern farmhouse to a European flat and their search for just the right space to call home.
“House Hunters International” is a hit TV show that follows people as they choose which of three houses to buy or rent in locations all over the world. Haley’s jump from being a fan of the show to actually being on it started back when she graduated from VHS and moved to Tennessee for college.
There Haley met Garrett, 28. They got married in April 2014 and settled down in a farmhouse right outside Murfreesboro, Tenn.
Last year Garrett’s employer, a global cosmetics company, offered him a great job opportunity in Germany, and the couple left country life behind for the streets of Nuremberg.
As they made the move last August, Haley brought up the show, more as a funny passing thought than anything else.
“We’ve watched (the show) for years,” she said. “When we first found out that we were able to move to Germany for my husband’s job, I literally told him ‘What if we get on House Hunters by some chance?’

“Honestly it was kind of a big joke. Who would’ve thunk that later on down the road … that we actually would be (on the show)?”
Garrett reached out to the show on a whim early last fall, but it wasn’t until several months later when a casting crew made contact with the couple.
“It was the whole nine yards,” Haley said. “We went through interviews and a casting call, so it was definitely several months of waiting and then finally we got the word that ‘Hey, you’ve been picked.’”
The couple came back to the States for Christmas. In January the two swung by their former farmhouse to film for a day, which wasn’t a problem because Haley’s younger sister, Kayla, is living in the Tennessee home while she too goes to college there.
In February, the couple filmed for four days back in Germany, which was no small task, Haley said.
“It was definitely hard work because you’re filming all day long, but the crew really made it worthwhile and definitely made it a good and fun environment to be in,” she said.
She added that the footage captured for the show is “authentic.”
“The experience is very, very real. Going into the different houses … our reactions are real,” she said. “Granted you are filming for five days, but … it’s very authentic. It’s a lot of fun at the same time.”
Since moving to Europe, Haley has also gotten a job at Garrett’s company, which creates makeup for a ton of different brands. He’s an engineer and she works in the color lab.
“So I create the colors and he literally creates the packages, so we’re right across the hallway from each other,” Haley said.
Their exciting adventure in a new country will now include being watched by millions around the world, but Haley said the move hasn’t been without its challenges.
“Transitioning from southern life to German life has definitely been a big adjustment. It’s everything from learning a new language and culture, to living a more simple lifestyle in a small flat,” she said.
“Everyone here focuses more on family, friends and the enjoyment of traveling. Thankfully, we’ve met a great group of friends who really have made the adjustment easier and homier for us.”
Check out Haley and Garrett’s episode, “A New Job In Nuremberg,” Monday at 10:30 p.m. eastern time on HGTV.
The network’s description of the episode gives a few details on what to expect: “A couple leaves the rolling hills of Tennessee for a bombshell job offer in Nuremberg, Germany. He wants a modern home with a short commute, but she prefers a home with character in the city center that’s close to shops and restaurants.”
All viewers can hope for is that Haley makes Valdosta proud by not getting hung up on paint color.
