MAYO — The Lafayette County Board of County Commissioners approved Monday to repair the Airline Community Center.

At the board’s Monday meeting, Marcus Calhoun, department head of maintenance, told the board that the community center’s roof has gotten worse since the beginning of the month.

The total to completely renovate the whole community center will cost $21,000 and just to fix the roof and air conditioner it will cost $7,000. The board approved for Calhoun to get quotes and to bring them to Clerk of Court Steve Land to act on behalf of the board in deciding which quote is best.

The board also set a tentative budget public hearing for the 2017-18 budget year at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Also at the meeting, Scott Sadler, department head of public works, said that the department was on their fourth rounds of mowing. Grading the roads has had to slow down due to the lime rock being too wet to make a difference in where it would be placed.

The department has been renting a tractor to keep up with demand after theirs broke. The board approved for Sadler to keep using the rented tractor and to look at purchasing a new one before March 2018.

The board also approved a bid of $118,391 for a boom tractor mower from Gordon Tractor upon Sadler’s review to make sure the specs would work for the tractors.

There were four adoptions of ordinances, an agreement and a resolution passed at the meeting. The first ordinance was for pursing an application for the LDR 17-03 which is for amending article eight, flood damage prevention regulations to comply with Federal Emergency Management agency regulations.

The next ordinance was for the county to adopt the changes made by the state for the building code ordinance. The board approved the changes upon there being no issues and large changes to the ordinance already.

There was an amendment with construction and maintenance agreement with DOT to maintain the sidewalks for a safe routes to school program. DOT will handle all paperwork and resources for Bloxham and Crawford streets and Hawkins and Floyd avenues. The only thing the county will have to do is maintain the sidewalks after the improvements are made.

The board then approved to apply for a grant to improve the Industrial Park area. With the board’s approval, the county will be working to get a packet together that shows the improvements needed for the board’s review.

Jana Hart told the board that the UF Extension Office hosted another food drive on Wednesday at the community center.
