- Dean Poling | The Valdosta Daily TimesA full court of characters greets 'Alice@Wonderland' in the Gingerbread Players production.
VALDOSTA – The White Rabbit may be late but Alice’s cell phone has died.
While Wonderland remains stuck in the 1800s when Lewis Carroll first created the beloved children’s story, the title character is a thoroughly modern Alice in Gingerbread Players of Theatre Guild Valdosta production of “Alice@Wonderland.”
Gingerbread Players is the children’s theatre arm of the Guild. “Alice” features 35 area children and youths, said Bethanie Bass, the show director.
“Alice is in Wonderland and her cell phone is not charged,” Bass said. “She’s asking about the internet. And the Wonderland characters do not know what she’s talking about.”
Or singing about.
The show is a musical created by Jonathan Yukich, Bill Francoeur and Scott Deturk.
The Gingerbread Players synopsis: “The folly of the 21st century collides with the madness of Wonderland in this rocking musical adaptation that remains faithful to Lewis Carroll’s original tale. Alice is a texting, tweeting and Googling girl of the modern digital era, yet she finds herself in the Wonderland of old. With all of the characters you know and love including the Mad Hatter, the White Rabbit and the Queen of Hearts, this musical imagines a present-day Alice encountering the Wonderland so many of us treasure.”
