VALDOSTA — Georgia Christian School welcomed legendary coach Lou Holtz to its 10th annual fundraising banquet Thursday evening.

Holtz is best known for his time coaching Notre Dame, but he’s left his mark at every school he’s coached.

He is the only college football coach to take six different teams to a bowl game, win five bowl games with different teams and have four different college teams ranked in the final top 20 poll, according to his biography.

Holtz is also known for his colorful and insightful commentary on ESPN, radio programming and as a public speaker. He has written or contributed to 10 books to which he joked, saying he has written more books than he has read.

Speaking to those in attendance, Holtz summed up his life philosophy with three points: do what’s right, do everything to the best of your ability and show people that you care.

Each of the points was expounded upon with stories from Holtz’s personal life at home as a husband and a father and from his time on the field.

Funds from the dinner benefit Georgia Christian School. The school is working toward raising the funds for a new facility.

The annual banquet has become a premier event for the area, said Ryan Warren, a GCS board member, and GCS President Dr. Brad Lawson.

Speakers in past years have included former President George W. Bush, former First Lady Laura Bush, former Arkansas governor and presidential candidate Mike Huckabee, legendary quarterback Terry Bradshaw, country music star Vince Gill and former FOX News pundit and author Bill O’Reilly.
