Pioneer Day to be held Saturday

MAYO — After it was canceled due to weather a year ago, the annual Pioneer Day celebration will be back Saturday.

The 37th annual Pioneer Day will start at 10 a.m. with the Pioneer Day parade.

The parade will start across the street from Subs and More and travel down historic Main Street to Veterans Park.

The Pioneer Day Granny and Pappy are Chuck and Medora Spradling. The Spradlings were set to be Granny and Pappy a year ago before the event was canceled.

The Spradlings have lived in Lafayette County since 2000. They came from a small town in West Virginia, They have been married for 57 years and have three children: Sheryl Bell, Chuck Jr. and Michele Freemen. They have 13 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

They are the owners of the hometown grocery store, Mayo Thriftway.

Pioneer Day will have arts and crafts, great music and live local music set up at Veterans Memorial Park. ProBeatz DJ will be the MC. Live music will be performed by The Band of Brothers, Tracy Starling and Runnin Water Bluegrass, Cameron Williams and Jessica Johnson.
