TIFTON — The Tift County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents of a scam involving someone spoofing the TCSO’s phone number.
The Tift County Sheriff’s Office received multiple complaints on Friday, Oct. 20, according to a press release.
According to reports, someone calling himself Officer Hart from the Tift County Sheriff’s Office told victims that a warrant had been issued for their arrest due to missing jury duty.
The victims were told that they could get the warrant dismissed by paying a fine over the telephone.
The offender was able to provide the victims’ names and home addresses to them. In at least one instance, the TCSO’s main office number was displayed on the victim’s Caller-ID.
“The TCSO will not call to solicit payment of fines or fees over the telephone,” the release states. “We have never conducted business in this manner. If you receive any similar calls in the future and have any questions, please hang up and contact the Sheriff’s Office directly.”
The phone number for the TCSO is (229) 388-6021.
