Vikettes Wolverton, Merritt sign with colleges

A pair of Lowndes softball players signed collegiate letters of intent Thursday afternoon at Crimson Coliseum.
Rachel Wolverton signed with Georgia College and State University and Elie Merritt signed with Young Harris College.

“I am so proud of these two. They have both worked hard to get where they are, and deserve everything they get today,” coach Stewart Thomas said.
Wolverton, a 2016 and 2017 All-Region first-team selection, had 40 hits in 106 at-bats for a .377 slugging percentage as a senior. She hit three home runs, nine doubles and had a .441 on-base percentage. As a pitcher, Wolverton earned 10 wins, surrendered 45 hits and threw 111 strikes in 76 innings for a 1.47 ERA.
“Today has really been overwhelming,” Wolverton said. “So much time and effort has been spent by so many, and it is all represented by this one day. I am just really glad I got to share it with my family, friends, coaches and teammates, because I know I would not be here without them. My hope for this next endeavor is that I can continue to make them proud”
Merritt, a 2016 All-Region second-team selection, had an on-base percentage of .323 as a senior. She had 15 hits and four doubles for a .188 average in 80 at-bats.
“I was excited to see all of my family and friends support me today while signing to play softball at Young Harris College. Today was a culmination of many hours of practice, and weekends on the road. I wouldn’t change a thing,” Merritt said.
