VALDOSTA – Planning a holiday show has its share of uncertainties.

Especially one that stretches into the single-digit days before Christmas.

Theatre Guild Valdosta, for example, considered producing a full Christmas musical but was unsure if cast members would be able to fulfill a commitment of weeks of rehearsals then seven performances during the month of December.

So, Grant Brown proposed presenting a holiday revue show based on something he and the Phoenix Writing Crew created in 1978 while in Arizona.

Brown directs Theatre Guild’s “A Christmas Spectacular,” opening this week and continuing next week.

The show features Guild regulars and newcomers presenting a series of holiday songs along the loose framework of Christmas storylines, such as Scrooge and “The 12 Days of Christmas,” Brown said.

The show is also a variety-style production suitable for the entire family. The cast ranges from children to older adults.

The practical beauty of the show, the director said, is if a cast member withdrew from the show, another person could be selected to sing the song. Or much simpler, the song simply disappears from the 90-minute show.

But “A Christmas Spectacular” has had a dedicated cast, Brown said. Two of its members travel more than an hour back and forth each evening from nearby Florida towns, he said.

Given the cast’s dedication, Brown said the Guild may have to revisit the possibility of producing a Christmas musical next year.
