DALTON, Ga. — A Dalton woman who falsely reported her child being kidnapped by her ex-boyfriend and caused Dalton police to issue an alert for the child has been arrested for lying to police and false report of a crime.
Jenneffer Michelle Luke, 41, 1312 Winton Road-4, was being held on a $1,000 property bond at the Whitfield County jail Thursday.
Luke contacted the Dalton Police Department on Nov. 2 and told them her ex-boyfriend had taken her 1-year-old child on an overnight visit on Oct. 21 and had not returned him. She told police he had fled to Louisiana with the child. Warrants were issued based on Luke’s statements to police.
When he was detained and questioned in Louisiana, Dalton police received information that he had been given the child by Luke five months before, according to an incident report. Also, Luke had told police the exchange of custody was in Dalton, but in actuality, the transfer of the child was in Cleveland, Tenn.
DPD spokesman Bruce Frazier said Luke went to authorities in Tennessee after the child wasn’t returned and was told it would be a civil matter. Frazier said that after learning the laws in Georgia would likely lead to criminal charges for her ex-boyfriend, she reported the crime in Dalton.
“Luke later admitted to lying about the circumstances in which (the ex-boyfriend) came to have their child,” Detective Chris Tucker wrote in his report. “If aware of the truth in this case, I would have referred her to other resources to help her.”
