Lowndes quarterback Michael Barrett wants to be a Michigan man.

The three-star senior announced his commitment to the University of Michigan during the varsity boys basketball team’s game against Colquitt County at Crimson Coliseum on Tuesday night.

Barrett (6-foot, 221 pounds) also posted his announcement to his Twitter page.

“First off… I want to thank the man upstairs for giving me the opportunity and the ability to play the sport that I love, I want to thank my parents for setting me up on the best path that they could, and my family for being there whenever I needed them, I couldn’t have wished for anything better.

“Once again, I would like to thank my family, friends and everyone that has supported me throughout these past 4 years. Thank you to all of the colleges that gave me the opportunity to continue my football career at the next level. I couldn’t thank you all enough. This has been a long, exhausting process but it has all been worth it and now the time has come.”

Barrett’s commitment to the Wolverines comes a week after teammate Jalen Goss, a 6-7, 260-pound offensive lineman, committed to Florida State.

Barrett rushed and passed for more than 1,000 yards for a second consecutive season, in addition to being named Region 1-7A Player of the Year and to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution’s Class 7A All-State team.

As a senior, he completed 110 of 156 passes for 1,705 yards with 16 TDs and two interceptions. He rushed for 1,195 yards on 129 attempts with 13 TDs.

As a junior, Barrett was awarded the region’s Player of the Year and AJC’s 7A Offensive Player of the Year. He completed 132 of 217 passes for 2,760 yards with 27 touchdowns and six INTs. He also led the region in rushing with 1,192 yards on 171 carries for 21 scores.

Lowndes finished 11-1 in 2017 after a perfect 10-0 regular season led the Vikings to the region championship (their first region title since 2010). They set a new school record for points scored in a season with 627, shattering the previous record of 594 from the previous season.

Lowndes became the 60th team in Georgia high school history to pass 600 points in a season, according to the Georgia High School Football Historians Association. Lowndes scored 50 points or more in nine games.
