Mohl homers twice, Blazers sweep Rams

Jessica Mohl finished opening day with two home runs and the Valdosta State softball team swept the Albany State Rams (9-4, 8-2) on Thursday.
Taylor Hartenbach hit a homer in the first inning of Game 1 to put the Blazers (2-0) on the board. Mohl homered to right field in the fourth to give VSU a 6-1 advantage.
The Rams (0-2) plated a pair of runs in the fifth to pull within 8-4, but an RBI-single from Logan Hill and another run by Cassey Cornelius secured the victory.
Hartenbach went 3 for 4 at the plate for the Blazers. Haley Garrett batted 3 for 4 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Kathryn Carter (1-0) pitched a complete game, surrendering four runs (one earned) on seven hits with a walk and a strikeout.
Brianna Murillo was 2 for 4 at the plate with two RBIs for Albany State. Aryn McGowan (0-1) pitched a complete game, allowing 14 hits for nine runs (eight earned) with two walks and a strikeout.

Mohl and Crandall hit a home run apiece in the Blazers’ 8-2 victory in Game 2.
Mohl bated 3 for 4, scoring two runs with two RBIs for VSU. Crandall had three RBIs. Hartenbach was 2 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored.
Kameron Coggins (1-0) picked up the win in five innings. She gave up six hits and no runs with four strikeouts.
Murillo homered for the Rams in the sixth, but the Blazers had jumped out to an 8-0 lead.
Lauren Lowery (0-1) pitched 5 1-3 innings. She allowed eight runs (seven earned) on 11 hits with a walk and a strikeout.
The Blazers play Columbus State on Saturday at 10 a.m., followed by a game against Florida Tech at 12:30 p.m. in Columbus.
