LIVE OAK — Former city councilman Mark Stewart has announced his candidacy for the council’s District 4 seat.

“I am enthusiastic and look forward to serving the people of Live Oak,” Stewart said in his letter of intent to run, adding that he promises to be:

• Accessible
• Believable
• Committed
• Conservative
• Attentive
• A fulltime councilman.

Stewart said his prior leadership as councilman included projects such as a new sewer treatment plant, storm water improvements, city-owned prison water system, two firetrucks to lower ISO (fire ratings), sewer plant expansion with reuse capabilities, sewer line rehab, new water wells with storage tank and sewer lift stations. Stewart said those projects have made a major impact on the city’s preparedness for new business and residential development.

Stewart is a 1967 SHS graduate and a decorated Vietnam War veteran who graduated from North Florida Junior College in 1983. A 35-year employee of the U.S. Postal Service, Stewart has also been an active member of the First Baptist Church in Live Oak, serving 20 years as church treasurer. He’s been married to Wynalda “Sissie” Black for 50 years.

In announcing his candidacy, Stewart says he will work to lower property taxes, increase budget oversight, business and residential expansion, limit fee increases and promote flexibility and communications.

“I appreciate your vote and support,” Stewart said in his letter. “Let your vote be the first step in allowing me to be your voice in city government.”
