LIVE OAK — The Suwannee River Jam has already announced six artists for the May 2-5 country music festival and announced more Thursday.
The Kentucky Headhunters, a legendary country/rock band, will be among the country greats performing this year along with The Lacs and comedians/musicians Williams and Ree.
Those three acts will join with headliner and recent Country Music Hall of Fame inductee Alan Jackson along with LOCASH, Josh Turner, Tyler Farr, Easton Corbin and Rodney Atkins.
The celebrated Kentucky Headhunters, declared “the great American rock ‘n’ roll band” by Billboard magazine, began their professional journey in 1968 when brothers Fred and Richard Young and cousins Greg Martin and Anthony Kenney formed the Southern blues-rock band Itchy Brother. The band morphed into The Kentucky Headhunters in 1986. Their first album, 1989’s Pickin’ on Nashville, sold more than two million copies. The album won a Grammy Award, three Country Music Awards, an American Music Award and an Academy Of Country Music Award. It spawned four consecutive Top 40 Country hits. Currently, the band is made up of Richard Young, Fred Young, Greg Martin and Doug Phelps.
“We are who we are, and that’s what makes us what we have become,” Fred Young said in a release. “From our life experiences and how we approach and interpret music is how we became a band that tells real life stories. We are a band of many styles: rock, blues, country, jazz, bluegrass, rockabilly and other roots music. That is the foundation of our sound. Johnnie Johnson once told me ‘Music has no color.’ If I had to color the Headhunters, I’d color us music with a feeling.”
“People still can’t figure out what to call the music we do,” said The Lacs’ Brian “Rooster” King, looking at his longtime collaborator Clay “Uncle Snap” Sharpe. “We just get in there and write about what we want.”
The duo, from Baxley, Ga., has been together since 2000 and Outlaw, their fifth album since signing with Average Joe’s Entertainment, is a watershed effort from The Lacs that broadens their musical scope and blends together every genre from traditional country and southern rock to rap and the spoken word.
“Brian and I have prided ourselves on putting out real music that we lived,” Sharpe concluded, “and not just writing about some topic because it was a No. 1 for somebody else.”
Williams and Ree, known as the self-professed “Indian and White Guy,” have entertained audiences around the world for more than three decades with their unique and irreverent comedy/musical style. Bruce Williams and Terry Ree have established themselves as proven headliners at fairs, festivals, arenas and casino venues. They continually refresh and re-invent themselves show after show by incorporating topical and observational humor “dripped from the headlines.” Williams and Ree have the added “wow” factor of being terrifically talented musicians and singers as well.
More artists are expected to be announced soon.
