VSU softball splits road doubleheader

The Valdosta State softball team defeated Christian Brothers 5-3, before losing 9-2 against North Alabama on Saturday in Montgomery, Ala.
Cassey Cornelius had two hits and Taylor Hartenbach had two RBIs for the Blazers (11-3).

Avery Lamb (4-0) pitched seven innings, surrendering eight hits for three runs with four strikeouts and no walks.
Holly Oyhenart, Maddi Welch, Olivia Parsels and Abby Ferreira recorded two hits apiece for the Bucs (8-2).
Jenna Cotter (0-3) allowed eight hits for five runs with four walks and a strikeout in seven innings.
The Bucs led 2-1 heading into the fourth inning. VSU tied it in the fourth before Christian Brothers pulled ahead again with another run in the bottom half of the frame.
The Blazers found go-ahead offense in the seventh, plating three runs.
In Game 2 against UNA, Lacey Crandall finished with two hits, and Kathryn Carter (4-1) lasted 1 1/3 innings, allowing five runs off six hits with no strikeouts and no walks. Kasie Johnson relieved with 5 1/3 innings and gave up four runs on five hits with one walk and one strikeout.

Bailey Nelson had two hits and scored two runs and two RBIs for the Lions. Kara Brewer scored two runs on two hits with an RBI.
Laken Distefano (3-0) picked up the win in 5 2/3 innings. She surrendered two hits for no runs, three strikeouts and four walks.
VSU led 2-1 after the first inning. UNA scored four runs in the second to take the lead for good.
The Blazers continue play in Montgomery today, facing Gulf South Conference foe Mississippi College at noon.
