The Valdosta State baseball team surged for five runs in the top of the 10th inning to claim a 9-7 extra-inning victory in Sunday’s Gulf South Conference series finale against the West Alabama Tigers in Livingston, Ala.

The Blazers used four hits and two Tiger errors to send ten batters to the plate in the top half of the extra frame. BJ White and Elias Macias started off the critical rally with back-to-back walks, and a sacrifice bunt by O’Kevius Conway moved both into scoring position. With the potential go-ahead run at third, Kendall Herron slapped a single through the left side of the infield and plated both runners to put the Blazers on top 6-4. Both Carson McCullers and Ross Goforth delivered RBI singles later in the inning, which gave VSU a pair of important insurance runs for a 9-5 lead.

West Alabama put three of its own across in the bottom half of the 10th, but Blazer reliever Sean Gabel struck out the final batter of the game to give Valdosta State the league win. Gabel scored the individual win after closing out the game as well, which lifted him to 2-2 on the season.

The Blazers trailed 4-2 late, before Dalton Murray kept the game alive for Valdosta State with a two-run shot to left in the seventh that brought in Herron, who led off the half inning with a single. The home run marked the second extra base hit of the game for Murray, his second home run of the year, and the 14th of the year for Valdosta State, which places the team third on the Gulf South Conference home run leaderboard.

Valdosta State lifted their record to 7-11 overall with the win and moved to 1-4 in conference play. The Tigers, meanwhile, fell to 5-11 overall and shifted to an even 3-3 against league opponents.

Valdosta State has a midweek home matchup against Flagler on Wednesday at 5 p.m. at Billy Grant Field at Tommy Thomas Park.
