THOMASVILLE — Drug agents are finding “more and more” incidents of synthetic marijuana, the drug squad commander said Wednesday.
Louis Schofill, Thomas County/Thomasville Narcotics/Vice Division commander, told drug commission members the prevalence of the drug, also known as “spice,” in February cases.
Schofill said the narcotics/vice division is seeing more cases of probationers using spice, as the narcotic does not show up in a drug test.
“More and more people are smoking spice to substitute for the marijuana,” he said.
Spice also has a greater criminal charge than marijuana, Schofill pointed out, and also can cause bodily damage.
The drug squad also had two cases involving fentanyl in February. “Grey death,” a mixture of fentanyl and synthetic drugs, is suspected in both cases.
The first resulted in an overdose death, Schofill said, and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation is assisting with the case.
“It’s a hard case to try to prove,” Schofill added.
The second case involved a suspect from Albany bringing a delivery of methamphetamine. Drug agents also recovered a number of drugs from the arrest, including heroin that tested positive for fentanyl.
“He had just about every drug you can think of,” Schofill told drug panel members.
No firearms were recovered in February cases, according to Schofill.
In other business, the drug commission:
• Discussed three narcotics agents becoming SWAT-certified.
• Thomasville Police Chief Troy Rich discussed the city police department’s cases involving narcotics. All felony cases are turned over the narcotics/vice division, according to Rich.
