Alabama-Huntsville rode hot bats to a doubleheader sweep of Valdosta State on Saturday at Steel’s Diamond at Blazer Park.

The Chargers (17-6, 7-4 Gulf South Conference) crossed the plate 21 times in 12 innings as they pounded out 29 hits, including seven home runs.

Valdosta State spent much of Game 1 playing catch up until it surged ahead 8-6 in the bottom of the fourth on Heather Robinson’s two-run home run.

However, the Blazers’ lead was short-lived as the Chargers responded with a three-run shot off the bat of Kiara Akles to cap a five-run outburst the next half-inning.

Alabama-Huntsville scored in each of the first five innings through a combination of timely hits and VSU errors.

Blazers starter Kelsie Johnson and reliever Avery Lamb couldn’t cover for three errors through the first five frames of Game 1, combining to allow 15 hits and two walks, leading to 10 runs, seven earned, over 5 1-3 innings.

Akles took Kameron Coggins deep in her first at-bat after entering the game in relief with two runners on in the top of the fifth, but Coggins kept the Chargers off the scoreboard for the final 2 2-3 innings.

The Blazers’ offense just ran out of steam.

Valdosta State scored a pair of runs in the first and third to keep pace with UAH early, and it’s four-run fourth gave the team a brief lead.

But VSU ran out of gas, managing just three hits and four total baserunners over the final eight innings of the doubleheader.

Alabama-Huntsville proved it still had some firepower in its reserves for Game 2, exploding for eight runs in the first to bury Valdosta State.

Reagan Malone led off the first inning of the second game with a home run to center field, and four batters later, Taylor Wascavage hit a grand slam as the Chargers ran away with the contest.
