MOULTRIE, Ga. — Two men arrested Sunday in Thomas County after they reportedly tried to sell a stolen lawn mower to an off-duty deputy face additional charges in Colquitt County.
Colquitt County residents Jason Lee Baird and Claude Nelson Cowart were arrested along with Matthew James Champion of Cairo.
Police said that they tried to sell a stolen lawn mower to a Grady County deputy at a Thomasville truck stop. The deputy was suspicious and contacted law enforcement in Thomas County.
A trailer — along with two lawn mowers and tools loaded on it — had been stolen out of Grady County, police said.
In Colquitt County, Baird, 32, and Cowart, 43, face charges in connection with the theft on March 8 of a four-wheeler. The four-wheeler was later recovered in Mitchell County, Colquitt County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Katrina Johnson said.
The Honda Rancher 400 was valued at $4,000 and reported stolen by Justin Murphy of the 700 block of Shade Murphy Road.
When police searched the Baconton residence where the four-wheeler was located additional property, some of which could also be stolen, was found, Johnson said. Three people who were there at the time also were found to be wanted on active arrest warrants, two from Colquitt County and one from Lee County, she said.
“It’s been a multijurisdictional investigation between Colquitt, Mitchell, Grady and Thomas (counties),” Johnson said. “We’re still sifting through property to try to identify (owners). We’ve all been working together to identify the stolen property.”
In Colquitt County, Baird and Cowart have been charged with theft by taking in connection with the four-wheeler. Charges in Thomas County include theft by receiving stolen property.
