Junior Kasie Johnson collected her second shutout of the season on Thursday afternoon to help lift the Valdosta State softball team to a 2-0 Gulf South Conference win over the Auburn-Montgomery Warhawks in Montgomery, Ala.

After a Taylor Hartenbach walk in the top half of the first inning, Heather Robinson backed it up with an RBI double into the gap in right center. The run put Valdosta State on top 1-0, before the Warhawks turned Logan Hill’s follow up single into an out at home as Robinson tried to score.

Johnson, who improved to 5-2 on the year with Thursday’s victory, embraced the narrow lead and went to work for seven full scoreless innings of softball. Furthermore, the Patterson native didn’t allow an Auburn-Montgomery hit until the fifth inning.

Catcher Lacey Crandall gave the Blazers a clutch two-out RBI single in the top half of the sixth inning to supply her battery counterpart with one additional insurance run, which was more than enough for Johnson, who allowed just three hits in the game.

The Blazers improved to 20-7 overall and 8-5 in GSC play with the win, while the Warhawks fell to 12-7 on the season overall and slipped to 7-6 against league opponents.
