The Valdosta State men’s tennis team torched the Chargers of Alabama-Huntsville in a convincing 7-2 Gulf South Conference win on Sunday afternoon in Valdosta, and the Blazer women scored their first conference victory of the 2018 season against the Charges 6-2.
The men got off to a strong start at the VSU Tennis Courts with a sweep in doubles action for a 3-0 advantage.
Jordi Mas and Florian Simbozel, who currently represent the No. 19 tandem in Division II tennis, took down Dylan Hall and Timo Christen 8-2 at No. 1, before Fernando Rivas joined Francisco Yim Kim at No. 2 for a 9-7 triumph against James Caddies and Noah Pring. Axel Holm teamed up with Xavier Pineda to finish off the strong start with an 8-5 win against Guilherme Coleta and K. Roskell-Thomas at No. 3.
In singles action, No. 17 ranked Mas toppled Christen with a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 1, before No. 18 ranked Simbozel followed with a 6-1, 6-2 win against Elliott Hopson at No. 2.
Yim Kim and Holm picked up VSU’s final two wins at No. 4 and No. 6, respectively, with Yim Kim’s 6-1, 6-1 win against Tim Nutz and Holm’s comeback 4-6, 6-4, 10-3 victory.
UAH’s only two wins of the day came from Hall and Caddies at No. 3 and No. 5, respectively. VSU’s Rivas and Davis Stewart suffered the losses.
Valdosta State’s women were sparked by Sabrina Schmidt and Estee Widdershoven at No. 1 doubles, who scored an 8-5 win against Stefanie Mehlich and Sarah Stearman. Cristina Cabanas and Mariana Lopez fired right back with an 8-5 victory against Daniella Barta and Hera Brynjarsdottir at No. 2, but the Chargers were unable to send a full team out at No. 3, which allowed the Blazers to take a 2-1 advantage going into singles action.
After the break, Schmidt struck again with a 6-4, 6-1 win against Mehlich at No. 1, before Widdershoven cruised to a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 2. After Brynjarsdottir claimed a victory against Lopez at No. 4, Amelia Cornwall landed a win by forfeit at No. 6, and the Blazers secured the victory.
