- Hueston Morrill hit two home runs to help Suwannee get past Deerfield Beach on Tuesday.
LIVE OAK — Taking a four-run lead into the top of the seventh inning, Suwannee was just three outs away from victory in what was a pretty normal baseball game.
That’s when things started to get crazy.
Visiting Deerfield Beach, struggling at the plate the entire game, erupted for an unexpected six runs to take its first lead. But SHS didn’t fold when faced with adversity. The Bulldogs came back to force extra innings and then finished off a marathon game with Marquis Jones’ walk-off single in the ninth inning.
After playing for nearly four hours, the Bulldogs escaped with a 11-10 win on Tuesday.
“When a game starts going to that point, it’s just toughness and who wants it more,” said Bulldogs coach Justin Bruce. “We could have laid down a couple of times. Getting the win speaks for our team.
“We’re not winning pretty, but at the end of the day sometimes you have to take it in baseball.”
Hueston Morrill played a big part in the win. Suwannee’s leadoff hitter blasted two home runs and scored four times.
His last home run was a two-run shot in the ninth inning that tied the score at 10. After the home run, three straight hitters reached base to load the bases for Jones, who hit a ground ball through the left side of the infield to score Bo Bonds and give SHS the win.
Jones, who had a tough outing on the mound and was 0-5 before his final at-bat, came through when Suwannee needed it most. He also made a key play on defense in the eighth inning, making a diving stop near third base and tagging the bag to slow down a charging Bucks’ offense.
The Bulldogs finished the game with 11 hits. Trett Wadford went 3-5 with a walk and an RBI. Josh Wharton picked up two hits and scored three runs. Nolan Miller got the start for the Bulldogs and pitched four scoreless innings.
Making his varsity debut, sophomore Dawson Harrell picked up the win. He pitched the final 2 1-3 innings and allowed two earned runs.
“Biggest thing on the night was Dawson Harrell,” Bruce said. “A sophomore moving up to varsity and he played huge. That was a big lift when we needed it.”
