Adrianna Saavedra connects on a hit for Branford. BHS swung the bats well against Trenton, but errors were the difference in Wednesday's game.

BRANFORD — One bad inning and things came apart for the Branford softball team on Wednesday.

The Buccaneers were in the midst of a pretty good game with powerhouse Trenton (17-3, 8-0) — down 4-2 in the top of the fourth and one out away from getting out of the inning. But the Tigers capitalized on two errors and went on to score six runs, all of those coming with two outs.

Trenton piled on from there and ended the game in five innings with a 13-2 victory.

“We had so many errors. Defense got us,” said Branford coach Oscar Saavedra. “We’re a great hitting team, but when you make errors it brings everybody down.

“The girls have got to believe in themselves no matter what team it is.”

Branford got on the board in the third inning with an RBI double from Chloe Linton that scored scored Adrianna Saavedra. Branford’s next hitter, Brittany Frye, waited on a slow changeup and lined a single to left field to bring in Linton and cut Trenton’s lead to 4-2.

But that momentum was quickly stopped when Trenton came to bat in the fourth.

The Buccaneers finished with eight hits, three coming from Frye.
