VALDOSTA — Wearing crimson caps and gowns, 643 Lowndes High School students graduated Saturday morning at Martin Stadium.
The Air Force JROTC cadets began the ceremony with the presentation of colors followed by a rendition of the “Star-Spangled Banner” by the LHS chorus.
Third honor graduate Sarah Elizabeth Pearson gave the moment of silence and invocation to the class, with a memorial wreath hung for fallen classmates.
Salutatorian Chad David Hyer followed with a welcome and address to the class.
After Kathryn Mae Rothenhofer, fifth honor graduate, presented the class motto, reflections were given by senior class President Stewart Maxwell Ward.
Valedictorian Katelin Nicole Stecz shared advice with her class about the importance of drinking water, not reading beauty magazines and not worrying too much about what they want to do when they grow up.
“It’s okay to not know what you want to do with your life. The most interesting people didn’t at our age. And, the most interesting 50 and 60 years olds still don’t,” she said.
As Principal LeAnne McCall presented the class, she noted the major accomplishments for the group, ranging from academic to elective, and said the class has earned an excess of $11.9 million in scholarships.
She said the school focuses to provide experiences for all of its students that will serve them well after graduation.
“We strive to challenge students to always do their best,” McCall said.
“LHS has a legacy of greatness and the Class of 2018 has done their part to perpetuate it. As you go out into this world, I hope you will seek opportunities to inspire others,” she said. “That through your character and commitment, others will see in you tenacity, a determination and a passion to be a difference maker.”
Lowndes County Schools Superintendent Wes Taylor shared his parting wisdom to the next generation.
“Life is comprised of relationships with others; I encourage you to unplug, disconnect each day and spend some quality time actually communicating in person, face-to-face, with your family and friends,” Taylor said. “Establish healthy relationships with people who will help you learn, grow and get better.”
