MOULTRIE, Ga. — In March, The City of Moultrie opened a new recycling center with a goal in mind: to offer citizens the opportunity to reduce waste while, at the same time, reducing the volume of waste being sent to the landfill.
Citizens were encouraged to use the facility by bringing old metal appliances, corrugated cardboard, and empty metal cans, and all of this would be no cost to the citizens. Recyclable items would then be taken to a local recycler.

To date, the new Recycling Center has collected 2,100 pounds of metal from materials such as washing machines, dryers and stoves and 102 pounds of aluminum cans.
With the intent of giving back to the community, net profits from recycled items were to be given to the local Humane Society. The Humane Society is the nation’s largest and most effective animal organizations. Their goal is to promote responsible pet ownership and help secure permanent homes for animals. Locally, they provide hands-on care that includes rescues, direct care, and services to animals in crisis.
Recently, The City of Moultrie was able to make good on that promise and the first donation was made to the Moultrie-Colquitt County Humane Society from citizen’s recycled goods.
“With this donation, three dogs and one cat can be sponsored,” said MCCHS Executive Director Dawn Blanton.
In addition to the monetary donation, cleaning supplies and newspapers were also donated.
MCCHS is a non-profit organization and relies on community funding and donations to operate.

“Towels, bleach, blue Dawn dish detergent, lemon-scented Pine-Sol, sheets, pillows, can dog food, can cat food, cat milk replacement; these are types of donations the Humane Society can always use,” said Blanton.
