THOMASVILLE, Ga. — A woman pinned under a vehicle Friday night died as a result of an attempted vehicle theft, Thomasville police said Saturday.
At 11 p.m., police responded to a fight in the 400 block of Covington Avenue.
The woman was struck by a vehicle during the fight, said Sgt. Toby Knifer, Thomasville Police Department Criminal Investigations Division assistant commander.
Knifer said Lavontary Jones, 28, 519 Fifth Ave. N.W., is believed to have been attempting to steal the victim’s vehicle.
The victim and her son tried to stop the theft. A fight ensued between the son and suspect.
“The victim was struck by the vehicle and was entrapped by the vehicle,” Knifer said. “The vehicle was on top of her.”
Officers freed the woman and administered medical assistance until the Thomas County Emergency Medical Service arrived. The victim was taken to Archbold Memorial Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
Jones was arrested at the scene and taken to the Thomas County Jail.
Knifer said more details about the incident will be available as the investigation continues.
Agents from the Thomasville regional office of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation are assisting in the case.
