Man charged with cruelty to children for injuries to infant son
DALTON, Ga. — A Chatsworth man has been charged with cruelty to children in the first degree for injuries suffered by his two-month-old son. Joel Maggi, 22, was charged by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) and the Murray County Sheriff’s Office on Monday. The GBI said in a press release it was contacted by the sheriff’s office after the sheriff’s office was contacted by the Murray County Division of Family and Children Services (DFCS). DFCS had received reports from the Children’s Hospital at Erlanger in Chattanooga. “The infant was transported to the children’s hospital unresponsive and with unexplained life-threatening injuries,” the press release said. Maggi is in the Hamilton County jail in Chattanooga awaiting extradition to Murray County. The investigation is continuing. The results will be turned over to the district attorney’s office for prosecution.
Rubio’s staff to visit next week
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Staff representing Republican U.S. Senator Marco Rubio will be holding mobile office hours across the Suwannee Valley next week.
Members of Rubio’s staff will be at the old Train Depot, 210 Ohio Ave. N in Live Oak, from 9-11 a.m. on Wednesday.
The staff members will then head to the Lafayette County Courthouse, 120 W. Main St., at noon Wednesday to meet with constituents. They will be in the county commission chambers.
Rubio’s staff will also make a stop in Hamilton County at the Jasper City Hall, 208 W. Hatley St. The Hamilton County office hours are from 3-5 p.m. Wednesday.
During the mobile office hours, community members can bring forward any issues they are having and would like Rubio’s office to provide assistance. Among the areas in which staff may be of assistance are immigration, Medicare, IRS/banking, military/VA, social security and legislative issues.

Center for the Visually Impaired to hold low vision exams
TIFTON, Ga. — The Center for the Visually Impaired (CVI) is conducting free comprehensive Low Vision Examinations on Monday, June 25 at First Baptist Church, 404 Love Avenue. This service will be available to individuals who are appropriate candidates for this specialized evaluation.
A low vision specialist doctor will conduct a low vision examination. Participants will have the opportunity to meet with a low vision specialist who will conduct an assessment to determine if optical devices would be beneficial to the individual. If an optical device is recommended, training will be provided. For those individuals who would benefit from instruction in safe travel (orientation and mobility) and activities of daily living, training will be provided. A Social Worker will be available to provide resources and answer questions. Appointments are necessary and can be made by calling 704-236-7444.
