Valdosta High to receive QB transfer from West Virginia

- CHRIS DORST | Gazette-MailQuarterback R.T. Alexander is leaving St. Albans (W.V.) to attend Valdosta High.
A promising signal-caller from West Virginia is set to make his way to the Azalea City in the coming weeks.
According to comments provided to the Gazette-Mail in Charleston, W.V., rising sophomore quarterback R.T. Alexander intends to move to south Georgia to play for Valdosta High.
He has not yet officially enrolled in school.
A freshman at Class 3A St. Albans, Alexander passed for 1,998 yards and 12 touchdowns. He also ran for three scores and earned the Gazette-Mail’s Freshman of the Year award by leading the Red Dragons to within one spot of the program’s first postseason berth in a decade.
Speaking to the Gazette-Mail, Alexander’s father Robert, a two-time West Virginia High School Football Player of the Year and a former West Virginia University and NFL running back, gave several reasons to explain the family’s decision to move.
“It’s the whole ball of wax,’’ said Robert Alexander. “It’s better for my wife’s health, and for mine as well. There’s not enough coaches here, and [R.T.] needs coaching. They have a full staff [at Valdosta]. It’s like a college staff — an offensive coach, a defensive coach, a head coach, position coaches. Robert wants to get to the next level, and we want to put him in position to have someone coach him to the next level.”
It’s unlikely Alexander sees the field much in the upcoming season as his family told the Gazette-Mail their intention is to depart for Georgia later this month.
With Valdosta High’s scrimmage against Glynn Academy scheduled for Aug. 10, and the season-opener against Jackson one week later, it will be difficult for Alexander to learn offensive coordinator Joshua Crawford’s system before the games begin to count.
Rising junior Tate Rodemaker has also given the Wildcats reason for optimism at the position with his development throughout the offseason, following a brief cup of coffee as the team’s quarterback late last season saw him complete 55 percent of his passes for 565 yards and six touchdowns to three interceptions.
But at 6-foot-3, 180 pounds with a shoe size matching his age (16), Alexander represents a tantalizing prospect in the future.
