RAY CITY — “I know that with whatever goals I’ve set, I know that with God’s help, I can achieve them.”

The message of overcoming obstacles is alive in the screenplay “Breaking Free,” according to its writer, Angela Camon.

The Ray City resident has won the best script feature award in a global Culdee Arts Reel Entertainment competition for the inspiring screenplay. Her category was family films/drama.

Camon said “Breaking Free” takes place in Georgia and is centered around a young girl in poverty as she strives to become a physician.

Throughout her journey, she’s faced with naysayers and opposition. Her grandmother is the only source of encouragement, and the main character fulfills her goal, Camon said.

“It just teaches us that no matter what we have against us, or no matter what our circumstances are, that we can accomplish all that we set our hearts to,” she said.

Unlike her character, Camon said she didn’t come from the projects but she did battle negativity through her past. Writing was her coping mechanism.

Her passion for the art came about when she won a contest at the age of 13 or 14 for a poem titled “A Child’s Plea.”

In the poem, a child begs a parent for understanding that mistakes are natural. The subject pleads to be embraced, loved and encouraged, Camon said.

Perseverance is necessary to defeat limitations planted by others, the writer said.

Camon has written six books, including “Why I Waited: A Guide to Maintaining Your Virginity,” and four screenplays.

While writing books, she said she received the assignment from God to begin scripting screenplays. All of her writing is inspirational, she said.

“God just put it in my heart to write inspirational movies, not just for the faith-based audience, but for anybody that wants to be inspired,” she said.

Camon would like to one day own a production company. She pastors First Born Church of the Living God, headquartered in Waycross. She is also senior editor of the church’s publication, “Gospel Echo.”

Rewards for winning the CARE award include prize money, free marketing for “Breaking Free,” a trophy and a certificate. CARE will host an awards banquet in December in Virginia and Camon plans to attend.
