Murray County falls, Christian Heritage game suspended

Armuchee 28, Murray County 7

Murray County fell to Armuchee on Friday night 28-7. Murray County’s touchdown came in the second quarter when Kaleb Jones found Justin Genitempo for a 40-yard touchdown pass. Armuchee led 21-7 at the half. In the backfield, Brendan Owenby began the job of replacing Murray County’s all-time leading rusher Tucker Gregg, and head coach Chad Brewer said he was impressed with Owenby’s performance. To win moving forward Brewer said the Indians will need to clean up mistakes.

“The effort was there all night,” Brewer said. “Our defense was on the field too much during the game. Offensively we have to eliminate the turnovers and must execute on a consistent basis if we want to be successful.”

Murray County plays at Southeast next Friday at 7:30 p.m.

Christian Heritage 17, Riverside Military Academy 7 (game suspended in the third quarter)

Christian Heritage and Riverside Military Academy were suspended early in the third quarter due to inclement weather. The game will resume on Aug. 31 and be picked up where it was suspended.

The Lions jumped out to an early lead when Zach Gentry intercepted a Riverside pass and returned it 50 yards for a touchdown, making the score 7-0 with the extra point. Joe Dixon nailed a 41-yard field goal to increase the lead to 10-0. Matthew Neff found Gentry, this time on offense, for a long touchdown pass and the Lions were up 17-0 in the second quarter.

After Evan Lester intercepted another Riverside pass, this time in the end zone, Lester was tackled at the two, pinning Christian Heritage deep on its side of the field. Christian Heritage was forced to punt a few plays later, and Riverside scored its touchdown just before the half.

Lions head coach Jay Poag was impressed with his team’s defensive performance, which included three turnovers in the first half.

“I thought our defense was really strong,” Poag said. “I think we have a chance to be really good over there. We’ve got some strength and they like to hit people.”

Christian Heritage will play Friday at Gordon Central at 7:30 p.m.
