MOULTRIE, Ga. — An argument between two Colquitt County Jail inmates turned into a melee involving them and at least four other men in the day room. Six inmates were charged in the Aug. 30 disturbance.
At about 7:55 p.m., according to police, two of the inmates squared off.
“It started when an inmate by the name of Tevin (Shaqil) Hightower got into an altercation with another inmate by the name of Robert Simpson,” Colquitt County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Christopher Robinson said. “When that fight broke out everybody else pretty much started fighting one another.”
Video showed one inmate hurrying down the stairs to join in the scuffling on the first-floor day room.
“I don’t know how to describe it other than a brawl,” Robinson said.
During the melee Hightower and a second inmate, Raekwon Brown, can be seen pulling Simpson back into the bathroom.
“They were basically stomping his head onto the concrete,” Robinson said.
Brown, 17, and Hightower, 24, each were charged with aggravated assault as well as riot in a penal institution, both felony charges.
Charged with riot in a penal institution only were: Charles Fletcher Escoffier, 20; Allen Scott Jones Jr., 35; Jerry Lovett Jr., 27; and Tyran Trinidad Montgomery, 19.
Brown was checked by jail medical staff and did not require treatment at the hospital, Robinson said. Inmate Justin Collier suffered an injury to his mouth and was taken to Colquitt Regional Medical Center, where he was treated and released.
Robinson could not give direct cause for the fight breaking out.
“Somebody said there may have been an argument over a television,” Robinson said. “I know for sure they were arguing about something.”
