But still undefeated.

Rogan Wells helped the Valdosta State offense hum once again, throwing for 295 yards and six touchdowns with two interceptions as the No. 13 Blazers defeated the Mississippi College Choctaws 63-42 at Robinson-Hale Stadium on Saturday night.

“It all starts with our O-line,” Wells said after VSU remained undefeated at 5-0 and 3-0 in the Gulf South Conference. “Our receivers were doing a great job running routes.

“Scoring 63 points… we can do it in the air and on the ground.”

The Choctaws’ option offense gave VSU trouble throughout the night. Chase Hughes broke free from VSU’s “Black Swarm” defense for a 38-yard TD run and a 7-0 lead with 10:29 left in the first quarter, capping a six-play, 69-yard drive.

“It’s so different to our defense, having to play a different style of defense when you play that kind of option team,” VSU coach Kerwin Bell said.

The teams traded scores before VSU gained an advantage with three touchdowns in 4 minutes of the second period.

Wells hit Darrell Myers for a 15-yard scoring strike with 6:07 on the clock, helping the Blazers break a 21-21 tie. Two minutes later, VSU used one play to reach the end zone. Wells found Lio’undre Gallimore for a 42-yard score. Jamar Thompkins busted a 68-yard scoring run with 2:07 remaining in the half.

The Blazers possessed the ball for 9 minutes, 54 seconds in the first half and went to intermission with a 42-21 lead. They had the ball for another 9 minutes in the second half.

Mississippi College dropped to 2-2 and 0-2 in the GSC.

“Great teams complement each other,” Bell said. “When the defense is not playing well, the offense plays well. And this team seems to be able to do that.”
