- Star Wars: Darth Vader 2
If “Solo” was fun but not that fun and didn’t feel like “Star Wars,”; if “The Last Jedi” felt like a betrayal, check out “Star Wars: Darth Vader.”
Yes, it’s a comic book instead of a movie. But it feels more like “Star Wars” than any of the recent movies.
“Star Wars: Darth Vader” 2 collects “Darth Vader” issues 13-25, the annual No. 1, “Vader Down” No. 1 and “Star Wars” issues 13-14. All collected in a recently released, premium hard-cover edition filled with added features such as cover variations, etc.
The first issues of “Darth Vader” occurred after the destruction of the Death Star. He’s in trouble with the Emperor and Vader wills himself back into a position of prominence. He also discovers the rebel who destroyed the Death Star – Luke Skywalker – is his son.
In this second collection, Vader seeks capturing Luke, with hopes of a father-son partnership. Vader is assisted by a coterie that’s sort of a dark alter ego group of Luke’s friends: a pilot, a torture-happy droid, a heavy-duty arsenal smaller droid, a dark-haired wookie.
Adding to the sense these comics feel more like “Star Wars” than recent movies is the art, especially the art from “Vader” and “Star Wars” titles. Han looks like Harrison Ford. Leia looks like Carrie Fisher. Luke looks like Mark Hammill.
The resemblances should take long-time “Star Wars” fans back to the early years of watching the original trilogy of films.
Again, all in the pages of a comic book.
And Vader is restored to his position of sinister grandeur, possibly even more than in the original movies. Alone in his tie fighter, he can take on a squadron of rebel pilots. He can hold off an army with his light saber and the Force.
Get your “Star Wars” back. Get “Darth Vader.”
