Packers pull away from Wildcats

MOULTRIE, Ga. — The film study will show how much trouble No. 1 Colquitt County had running the football between the tackles Friday.
The last thing fans watching the action on Tom White Field at Mack Tharpe Stadium will remember, though, is when Ty Leggett finally got a seam to go untouched for a 40-yard fourth-quarter touchdown.
Linebacker Rashad Revels also scored one of the longest touchdown plays in Packer history. His 97-yard return of Camden County quarterback Logan Watson’s fumble — also in the final period — punctuated now 8-0 Colquitt’s 38-9 win against the Wildcats to begin Region 1-7A.
With Tift County’s victory against Lowndes also on Friday, that sets up the battle for first place at Brodie Field in Tifton next weekend between the Packers and the Blue Devils.
Leggett finished the Camden game with 89 rushing yards on 19 carries, an average of 4.7 per rush bolstered by his second touchdown at the 1:33 mark of the fourth quarter. Daijun Edwards, who also scored a touchdown on the ground, had 54 yards net on 14 totes, a 3.8 average.
Quarterback Jaycee Harden scored running the football in the first half and added 28 yards to the ground game. He came out throwing the football, however, with eight completions in 14 throws for 139 yards in the first half. That dropped down to six attempts in the second half, four completed for 26 yards with one interception.
One thing head coach Rush Propst can always rely on in 2018 is the Packer defense, which did not allow an offensive touchdown to Camden, which came into the game at 6-1 and on a five-game winning streak. The linebackers, safeties and end Brian Merritt were constantly in the backfield off the ball and open-field tackling the short passing game to death. The Wildcats accumulated 220 yards from scrimmage and was victim to not only the Revels fumble recovery but also a Camari Louis interception in the second half.
Sacks against Watson came from Samari Louis, Kendrick Neloms and Merritt, who also blocked a field-goal try.
This was the first football action for Colquitt since Sept. 28 due to Hurricane Michael. There were a couple of anxious moments when Camden took the first possession, one being a muffed punt return the Wildcats recovered on the Colquitt 37-yard-line. This new life for the visitors got even more of it on a personal foul called on third-and–11. Watson completed play-action over the middle to Logan Berryhill, who was ruled down on the 1.
But for that home defense, it was the latest goal-line stand with S. Louis’ sack and pressure from linebacker Marcus Anderson. Camden did make a 33-yard field goal to lead 3-0.
Colquitt proceeded to score on three straight possessions beginning with an 80-yard drive in nine plays. Lemeke Brockington had two catches for 49 yards, and Edwards capped it off with a 6-yard touchdown.
The second Packer touchdown came with 10 seconds left in the opening period. It was on a four-play drive of 42 yards. Harden faked a handoff to Leggett and followed the strong-side blocking for a 13-yard score.
As stated, all of Colquitt’s running problems was going inside. Leggett found his first touchdown of the game cutting to his right after finding the interior clogged up. It was a 5-yard run at 7:19 of the second period.
Ryan Fitzgerald made all PAT tries.
The Packer offense went stagnant the rest of the half and gave the Wildcats six points on a lost fumble carried five yards over the goal line at 2:36. Camden had a chance to add more points, but Merritt blocked the kick of 30 yards at the 23-second mark.
At the half, it was 21-9 Colquitt County, and it stayed that way through the third period. The Packers made three first downs, but lost one possession on downs.
When C. Louis made his interception, there was 1:24 to go in the third, and the offense started on its own 44. Going into the final quarter, Fitzgerald booted a 42-yard field goal for 24-9.
Camden had three chances to score denied by S. Louis, Merritt and even Ty French. Gary Brewington of Camden intercepted Harden at 7:06.
After Leggett’s long touchdown made it 31-9, Watson hit two pass plays to get first-and-goal on the 2. But as he ran the keeper, the ball popped loose and Revels had on open field to score.
