VSU’s cross country teams perform well at Bobcat Invitational

The Valdosta State men’s and women’s cross country teams performed well at Georgia College’s Bobcat Invitational on Saturday.
The men’s team finished ninth with 236 points, while the women’s team finished 10th with 286 points. A total of 12 Blazers between the men’s and women’s teams tallied personal record times in the meet.

Both VSU teams finished in the top 10 among Division II schools as the men were eighth and the women were seventh. Leading the way for the Blazers was senior Jaison Morning, who finished with a time of 23:03.6 for 18th in the 8K race, while freshman Kailey Brough finished 46th on the women’s side with a time of 24:57.4 in a 6K.
On the men’s side, UNC Pembroke won the 18-team field with 59 points, followed by Gulf South Conference member Alabama Huntsville with 71 points and Augusta was third with 80. GSC member Montevallo finished fourth with 106 points and Auburn Montgomery edged VSU for eighth with 209 points.
UNC Pembroke had the top-three finishers for the men, as Silus Kipkoech won the event with a time of 24:08.1. Teammates Joshua Chepkesir and Logan Ward were second and third, respectively, out of 162 runners.
Florida State took top honors on the women’s side with 47 points, while Alabama-Huntsville was second with 59 points and Montevallo was third with 99 points. Individually, Wesleyan junior Katherine Neal took home top honors with a 18:16.4 time, followed by Justine Glass of Montevallo (21:54.7). Alabama-Huntsville’s Angel Mobley was third at 22:10.2.
Freshman Kevin Favard followed Morning with a time of 26:58.7 for 57th place and freshman Khiro Hoilett was 59th with a time of 27:02.3. Junior Chance Roe finished 65th with a time of 27:10.1, followed by freshman David Gunn at 27:17.0 for 68th. Senior Michael Perona finished 87th with a time of 28:10.6, while sophomore Nicholas Flatt finished the race with a time of 28:44.5 for 98th for seven runners in the top 100, to round out the scoring for VSU. Junior Caleb Watson finished 104th with a time of 29:19.3, while sophomore Daniel Swilley finished 118th with a time of 30:06.7 and freshman David Shrier finished 124th with a time of 30:44.1.
Morning, Favard, Hoilett, Roe, Watson, Shrier and Swilley all had personal records in the race.

For the VSU women following Brough, sophomore Angela Cipriani finished 61st with a time of 25:24.6, followed by freshman Makenzee Page with a time of 25:43.5 for 66th. Freshman Samantha Murray crossed the line in 26:20.0 for 81st and sophomore Olivia Rosener finished at 26:38.7 for 85th. Junior Jamie Ford finished 100th with a time of 27:58.0 for six runners in the top 100. Sophomore Amanda Allred finished 110th with a time of 29:50.6 to round out the VSU scoring, while freshman Kali Carter finished 127th with a time of 32:41.3 and freshman Chelsea Blackwood finished 142nd with a time of 42:12.4.
Brough, along with Cipriani, Page, Rosener and Murray all had personal records in the women’s race.
VSU returns to action at the Gulf South Conference Championship on Nov. 3 in Clinton, Miss.
