Big swings, big win

Jessie Mooney tied her career-high kill mark with 18, Katie McInnis and Chloe’ Chubilleau joined her with double-digit kills apiece and the Valdosta State volleyball team powered past the West Georgia Wolves 3-1 (25-16, 25-17, 22-25, 27-25) at The Complex on senior day Saturday afternoon.

Seniors Chubilleau, McInnis, Chelsea Chavers and Lindsey Robinson were honored prior to the match.

Mooney swung for 18 kills to tie her career mark in the category two days after posting 18 kills in the Blazers’ 3-1 loss against Georgia College. She hit .341 on 44 swings to go with 12 digs to give VSU (14-15, 9-4 Gulf South Conference) a win in the third match of a four-match home stand.

Chubilleau added 12 kills and 11 digs, while McInnis just missed a double-double with 10 kills and nine digs. VSU hit .192 for the match with 59 kills in 167 swings, along with 56 assists and 82 digs with five total blocks.

Aiasha Ambrose led the Wolves (11-12, 5-8) with 11 kills and was their lone player to reach double figures. The Wolves hit .107 for the match with 36 kills in 149 swings, 34 assists and 69 digs, while recording 12 total blocks.

The Blazers cruised in the first two sets to a 25-16 win and a 25-17 win as VSU hit .385 for the first set and .186 for the second, while West Georgia hit .136 for the first and .028 for the second. 

The Wolves broke a 4-4 tie with a miscue by the Blazers and jumped out to a 10-5 lead in the third set, but the Blazers continued to fight and pulled within one at 14-13 on an attack error by the Wolves.

West Georgia responded and kept the Blazers from tying the score. 

The Blazers used back-to-back aces from Kayla Widera for a 21-21 score, but a kill from Ambrose, an ace and back-to-back kills gave the Wolves set point. Anjelina Webb tallied a kill sending the match to the fourth set, 25-22.

Just like the third, West Georgia took control early, but an attack error gave VSU a 10-9 lead.

From there, the Wolves built a 13-10 lead, but the Blazers kept chipping away and answered with four straight points to tie the set at 20, capped with an emphatic kill from Mooney.

A miscue on the Wolves gave VSU its first lead since 1-0 in the set at 21-20, but West Georgia responded, tying the set at 23.

Chubilleau got a big kill for a 24-23 lead and the first match point for the Blazers. A service error tied the set at 24 and Chubilleau had a kill for a 25-24 lead, but the Wolves tied the set for the 10th time at 25.

A miscue on the Wolves gave VSU its third match point and Widera earned the winning kill for a 27-25 win.

The Blazers close the 2018 home slate at 6 p.m. Tuesday against nationally ranked West Florida at The Complex.  The match might get moved to a 7 p.m. start, if the VSU soccer team hosts a Super Tuesday match. The start time for the volleyball match will be updated accordingly.
