- Avengers: Endless Wartime
Captain America wasn’t the only thing slumbering in the ice lo these many years.
On the site where Thor thought he slew an abomination and its spawn ages ago, Cap believed he had destroyed Nazi weaponry near the end of World War II.
Decades later, at the site of this mistaken coincidence of unknowingly unfinished business, creatures that are a mix of Nazi technology and Asgardian monster-spawn arise.
Perhaps only the Avengers can stop what two members believed they had stopped in the past.
“Endless Wartime” is a comic with cinematic scope. A one-shot graphic novel by Warren Ellis, Mike McKone and Jason Keith.
The book captures playful banter between the characters, as well as tensions straining their relationships, all against the action-packed backdrop of the drama of regrets and mistakes.
The principals are here: Captain America, Iron-Man, Thor, the Hulk, Black Widow, Hawkeye, including the primary movie Avengers adds to the cinematic feel. But “Wartime” also includes Captain Marvel and Wolverine as Avengers.
There are some great scenes where Wolverine, who also fought in World War II, senses Cap’s disdain for the mutant’s violence. Wolverine snidely refers to Captain America as the saint of World War, the only soldier in war who acts like he didn’t kill anyone.
Wolverine also has a great scene where he admonishes Cap and Thor for failing to follow through decades and ages past.
Had they followed through in their separate incidents, the Avengers and the world wouldn’t be facing the current horrors.
“Endless Wartime” is smart and fun, a wild ride and a thought-provoking narrative, a character study with insight and humor.
