DOWLING PARK — The Jo Kennon Public Library in Dowling Park isn’t turning into a barber shop, but it does want to spur the type of conversation that takes place in one.
Starting Nov. 8, the library is starting a discussion group called Barbershop Chat.” The chats are scheduled for the second and fourth Thursday’s of the month — as the calendar allows — at 10 a.m. Coffee and snacks will be provided and the group hopes to chat about everything from history to current events and everything in between, just like in a barber shop.
The library’s monthly programs begin Thursday when county historian Eric Musgrove will be present at noon to talk about the 1930s.
The seed library will also be open Thursday — as well as Nov. 15 — from 9:30-11:30 a.m. Guests, with a current library card, can “check out” up to three packets of seeds every month. The Master Gardeners’ workshop, usually held on the first Thursday of the month will be held Nov. 15 due to early voting taking place at the library through Nov. 4 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily. Election day is Nov. 6 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Also on Tuesday, the Craft Club will meet from 4-5 p.m. and those attending are encouraged to bring whatever craft they are currently working on.
The library is hosting its recipe swap Nov. 8 at 1 p.m. featuring Thanksgiving favorites. There is no need to bring food, just the recipe to swap.
Movies will be shown Nov. 8 at 3 p.m. and Nov. 10 at 1 p.m. at the library.
Marvin and Lorraine Casey, Dowling Park residents, were missionaries in India from 1960-1972. They will be hosting the Armchair Travels program Nov. 9 at 10 a.m. with slides and a variety of hand crafts.
The library — and all the branches of the Suwannee River Regional Library System — will be closed Nov. 12 in honor of Veterans Day.
McAlpin resident John H. Bell will present his one-man show of “A Christmas Carol” by Charles Dickens at 2 p.m. on Nov. 13. The show is an annual gift to the community as part of the Live Oak Artists Guild’s outreach and education program.
The Master Gardener’s workshop Nov. 15 will be about prepping for winter. Those attending will learn about mulching, trimming and planting bulbs. The workshop will last from 10-11 a.m.
An Elder Options program will be held Nov. 15 at 1 p.m. Kristina Young will lead the presentation about Medicare open enrollment. For anyone wanting a private conference with Young should schedule one before 1 p.m. A sign-up sheet is located at the Jo Kennon Library.
Live Oak Library staff member Debra Barney will visit the Dowling Park branch Nov. 16 for an Armchair Travels discussion about Bolivia at 10 a.m. Barney grew up in Bolivia and returned there as a missionary.
On Nov. 19, Chuck and Judy Maxwell will perform magic and illusion tricks at 10 a.m. at the library. The program is not recommended for children.
The library’s rock painting party is scheduled for Nov. 20 at 6 p.m. All supplies are provided.
The library will also be closed Nov. 23-24 for Thanksgiving.
On Nov. 27, though, the library will be hosting an ornament decorating party from 10-11 a.m. All supplies will be provided.
